whirlwind vacation

Jiangmen, Chileen, Macau, Hong Kong. 1 week - okay, not in that order specifically, but you get the picture.

Even though I am a city person, I find I revert back to a bit of the village hick whenever I visit my ancestoral village.

Apparently, when I am excited and telling a story, I rub my nose and pick my ear. I have no idea I do this, and I'm sure it's more disgusting than it sounds (at least I hope so), but I do it quite often, or so I've been told.

Although this is only my second time back to the village, I find it comforting that I have distant family that love me as if I was their son. The warmth they have for me is infectious, and I really do have this weird tingling feeling of regret whenever I leave.

The bigger Jiangmen city that adjacents my village? I'm not sure what to make of it yet. While it is much nicer than I remembered it to be 10 years ago, I am definitely meerly a visitor.

I hate the pushy Chinese people that surround me, but after hearing some of the stories by my aunt in Chileen, I totally understand and sympathize with why they are rude and such "go-getters" in everything they do, even if it's queuing (especially!) up in a line.

Yes, China is a thriving, booming country. We were only in a little city in a small part of China, and I can see that. However Westerners who think China has become the land of milk and honey is so very wrong.

I will miss my time here, and always wish I was living back in HK, but the reality of that might not happen.

Anyway, I'm babbling, so I'll end it here for now.

Back from Thailand, now in HK

Sometimes you get that special shot that makes the trip all worthwhile.

This is straight from the camera, no digital editing. Taken with a Nikon D70 with its own kit lens, using vivid settings. I knew the lighting was going to be perfect as I peered down the viewfinder.

And yes, I asked the Dad before snapping this picture, in Thai. He said okay.

Poor kid didn't like me much though. Free ice-cream didn't improve his disposition.
